Sleeping Beauty & Kingman Turquoise: A Gem Lover’s Guide

Sleeping Beauty & Kingman Turquoise: A Gem Lover’s Guide

Over the years, countless fashion trends have come and gone, gaining popularity then quickly fading away as society moves on to the next big deal. However, Western fashion remains a style that has endured the test of time and continues to be well loved across all generations. When people think of Western outfits, they often envision the classic look of cowboy hats, denim jeans, and leather boots ~ paired with bold statement jewelry crafted with vibrant gemstones and thoughtful Sterling Silver details.

The gemstone most often seen in Western jewelry is Turquoise, largely due to both its geographic origins and cultural significance. It has been primarily mined in the Southwestern states like New Mexico and Arizona. Indigenous peoples of the region, such as the Navajo and Pueblo, have long used Turquoise to craft jewelry, talismans, and ceremonial attire. Their artistic techniques and spiritual beliefs have greatly influenced how Turquoise is appreciated today. Turquoise carries the rich history of the land, the meaningful stories of the people, and a deep connection to Mother Earth. Its vibrant blue and green hues reflect the blue skies above us, the green grass around us, and the positive energy within us. For people who celebrate their birthday at the very end of the year, Turquoise also carries the importance of being the December Birthstone.

Two of the most legendary types of Turquoise are Sleeping Beauty and Kingman. Let’s discover what makes each of them so special!

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is as rare as it is enchanting! Its opaque color is vibrant and highly saturated, boasting a bright blue tone that many compare to a robin’s egg. The intense blue comes from high levels of copper present in the stone’s geological formation ~ a desirable effect. It’s highly sought after because it’s the only type of Turquoise that does not contain any matrix webbing, making it perfect for jewelry collectors who adore striking solid statements. Its name is inspired by the mountain range where the primary mine was located in Globe, Arizona. From a distance, the mountain range looks like a woman laying on her back gazing up at the open sky. The Sleeping Beauty Mine closed in late 2012, making the gemstone even rarer and higher in value.

Kingman Turquoise

Kingman Turquoise primarily comes from the mines of Cerbat Mountains located in Kingman, Arizona. Unlike the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise mine, the Kingman Turquoise mine still operates today! The Kingman mine is one of the oldest and longest running in America with over a century of history. Kingman Turquoise is not only cherished for its significance in Southwestern heritage, but it’s also admired for its stunning blue-green shades embellished with spider web matrix lines that bring a unique personality to every stone ~ “Mother Earth’s fingerprints” as we like to call it here at American West Jewelry. It’s the perfect gemstone for collectors who enjoy an abundance of detail.
