For nine days in October, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® creates an enchanted world of special-shaped balloon rodeos, twilight balloon glows, and vibrant balloon-filled skies. Brisk autumn mornings in the Rio Grande Valley create an otherworldly backdrop for the breathtaking majesty of the most popular event, Mass Ascension of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta®.
Those of us who live here never tire of the feeling of arriving on the field well before dawn, grabbing a breakfast burrito and a warm cup of coffee. As Dawn Patrol balloons test the weather conditions well before sunrise, the hundreds of pilots from around the world are briefed and the thousands of spectators roar with delight as the official announcement is made that Mass Ascension is a “go”! Balloon envelopes and baskets are unloaded and hundreds of volunteers assist the pilots in the inflating process. When the whistle blows signaling it is their turn to ascend, cheers go up from new found friends who have gathered at this most happy and uplifting event.
The colors of the balloons in flight are illuminated by the rising sun over the Sandia Mountains. This colorful, peaceful yet invigorating scene inspires those who attend to deck out in their most colorful, joyful jackets, hats and vests adorned with collectible pins collected throughout the years from the pilots, especially those flying the ever popular special-shaped balloons.
Our American West production studio is fortunate to be within the flight path of the balloons for these glorious nine days. In fact, many balloons land in our neighborhood. It brings a smile to everyone’s face to see a cactus, a huge dairy cow, Nemo and other shapes and happy faces drift gently overhead.
